Adilabad
The former name of Adilabad was Edlabad during the reign of Qutub Shahis. Adilabad was ruled by many dynasties such as the Kakatiyas, Mauryas, Satavahanas, Chalukyas, Qutub Shahis and Asaf Jahis. Adilabad takes its name from the former ruler, Yusuf Adil Shah. The city is located on a wooded plateau some 600 meters high between the rivers Godavari (south) and Penganga (north). It is an agricultural trade center, connected to Hyderabad and Nagpur in Maharashtra state in the north by a national highway. Teak and ebony are used commercially in the region. Agriculture and mining are important in the regional economy. Rice, sorghum and wheat are among the main crops, and coal, talc and limestone are mined. Nearby, in Mahur (in Maharashtra), is a fort dating back to the Bahmanī and ʿImād Shāhī dynasties (14th-16th centuries). Pop. (2001) 109,529; (2011) 117,167.
Telangana, also spelled Telengana or Telingana, state of south-central India.
