Ariyalur
Ariyalur district is an administrative district, one of the 38 districts of the Tamil Nadu state in India. The district headquarters is located in Ariyalur. The district has an area of 1,949.31 kmĀ².
Gangaikonda Cholapuram, built by King Rajendra Cholan of the Chola Empire, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is located in this district. The district is also known for its rich prehistoric fossils. Many fossils of giant mollusks and jawed fish, at least one fossilized dinosaur egg, and several fragmented fossils of sauropod and theropod dinosaurs have been discovered here. A site museum is being created at Keelapazhur to preserve and preserve the fossils. Ariyalur is known for its cement industry and Jayankondam has huge reserves of lignite.
In 1995, Tiruchirappalli was bifurcated and Perambalur and Karur districts were formed. Ariyalur district was separated from Perambalur district on 1 January 2001. But it was merged with Perambalur district on 31 March 2002. Ariyalur district was reconstructed on 23 November 2007. The district borders the districts of Cuddalore and northeast to the north, Mayiladuthurai to the east, Thanjavur to the south and southeast, Tiruchirapalli to the southwest and Perambalur to the west.
