Banka
With the sound of birdsong and the wind, rich in flora and fauna, Banka is located in the far southeast of Bihar. The name of the city of Banka means brave and the city attracts many people to the famous religious site and the annual festival that is held in the month of January. The city has hot summers and pleasant winters, making the winter months the best time to visit and enjoy the local culture and enthusiasm in the city. With its lush greenery, rich flora and distinct variety of fauna, the city is known for the Sal, Abuns, Asan, Kendu and Mahua trees, animals such as the Hanuman monkeys, jackals, deer, lions, bears, leopards, elephants and wild birds geese, quail, peacocks, parrots, hawks and pigeons. A religious destination in this city is the 700-meter-high Mandar Hills, which are of great value in the lives of both Jains and Hindus. The hills are Bankas main tourist draw as it has the famous temple, pond and festival for which Banka is most famous. At the top of the hill is a Jain temple and at the base is a Hindu temple.
The Jain temple here, called Digambar Jain temple, is built in memory of the 12th Jain Tirthankara Vasupujya who received nirvana here. The pond, which also has significance in Hindu religion, is called the Paapharani. Paapharani is a sacred pond where it is believed that a person can be delivered from all his sins. In the center of the pond, a Vishnu temple is built in the structure of a lotus. Known for its sweets and stone and wood decoration items, the Bounsi Mela takes place in the Mandar Hills in January and lasts an entire month. It is believed that Lord Vishnu chopped off the head of an Asura and piled the body under the weight of the Mandar hills, giving everyone a chance to celebrate his victory.
