Bharatpur
Bharatpur district is a district in the state of Rajasthan in western India. Bharatpur city is the district headquarters, divisional headquarters and Bharatpur police headquarters of the Rajasthan Police. Bharatpur district is part of the National Capital Region of India, Delhi.
The area was ruled by the Sinsinwar clan of Hindu Jats in the late medieval period. In 1733, Maharaja Suraj Mal built the city of Bharatpur. It is believed that under his rule it was a well fortified city. Bharatpur was excavated from Mewat and named after Lord Bharat. Bharatpur, also known as 'Eastern Gate of Rajasthan', is located in the Braj region, 180 km from Delhi.
Geographically, the district lies between 26° 22' and 27° 83' N and 76° 53' and 78° 17' E and the average altitude above sea level is about 183 metres. The city of Bharatpur is the district headquarters and is also known as Lohagarh. It is very close to major cities of Rajasthan and other states. The distance between Jaipur and Bharatpur is approximately 178 km, while Agra is at a distance of 55 km from the district. Mathura is 34 km away. Bharatpur touches the Deeg district of Rajasthan in the north, Mathura in the east, Agra of Uttar Pradesh and Dholpur of Rajasthan in the south and Dausa and Alwar in the west.
