Buxar
The quiet town of Buxar has earned its place in the history books because of two famous battles in the country - first fought in AD 1539 between Sher Shah Suri and Humayun in nearby Chousa, and the second in 1764, when Mir Kasim opposed Major Hector Monro. Tourists can still walk through this battlefield at Katkauli and take a look at a stone monument erected there. Located along the banks of the sacred Ganges River, Buxar offers a pleasant environment with a number of religious sites for pilgrims, including the famous Brameshwar Nath Temple and Bihariji Temple. Dumraon and Buxar Sadar (in the old Bhojpur district) are known for their natural beauty. The city comes alive during the festival of Chatth Puja (held twice in the months of March and November) when a number of activities are organized to celebrate the power of the sun god. Established in the year 1979, the Museum of Sita Ram Upadhyaya is named after a resident of Buxar and has extensive and valuable collections of rare artifacts, unique coins from ancient times, and well-preserved stones and sculptures.
The city of Buxar is perhaps best known for the historical battle between Mir Qasim and the British. Katkauli-ka-Maidan (the site of Katkauli) is the exact site where this battle took place in 1764. The Katkauli site is still remarkably preserved for their historical importance. One of Buxars most famous tourist sites, Katkauli witnessed the armed forces of Shuja-Ud-Daulah (Nawab of Awadh), Shah Alam II (Mughal Emperor) and Mir Qasim (Nawab of Bengal) that eventually became the British East India Company defeated. The city of Buxar is also popular for various religious sites. Brameshwar Nath Temple is one of the oldest shrines of Lord Shiva in Buxar, although most of the inhabitants know it as Baba Brameshwar Nath Dham. Bihari Ji Temple is located about 15 km from Buxar city. Dedicated to Lord Krishna, Bihari Ji Temple is also famously associated with Ustad Bismillah Khan. During his childhood, the eminent Shehnai maestro was known for his music in this temple along with his father, Bachai Miyan.
