Firozpur
Before 15 August 1973, this district was the southernmost of the seven districts of Jalandhar division of the state of Punjab. On that date, the new Ferozepur Division was formed and Ferozepur District became a part of it.
The boundary of the present Ferozepur district in the east runs along the districts of Moga, Faridkot, Mukatsar and Fazilka. In the northeast, the Sutlej River generally separates the area from Jalandhar and Kapurthala districts. The United Sutlej and Beas Current generally separates it from the Taran Taran district in northwest and beyond Pakistan, except in some areas on both sides of the river.
Ferozepore is an ancient city near the present-day Indo-Pakistani border. It is believed to have been founded by Ferozeshah Tughluq in the 14th century. Another version claims that it was founded by a Bhatti chief named Feroze Khan. However, the first version is more accepted because Ferozeshah Tughluq was passionate about building new cities and renaming old ones, especially after his own name.
Firozpur district is one of the important historical districts of Punjab. The name Firozpur obviously means city of Firoz. Probably the founder was Firoz Shah Tughlaq (AD) 1351-88), as the place must always have occupied an important position on the line of communication between Delhi and Lahore. However, another tradition of their tradition attributes its foundation to one of the Bhatti leaders, named Firoz Khan, in the mid-16th century.
