Charpala Wildlife Sanctuary is located in Gadchiroli district of Maharashtra. It extends over an area approximately 140 km long and has dense forest with occasional extensive grasslands. The Markhanda and Pedigundam hills flank the sanctuary from the northeast and south and the Pranhita river flows along its western border.
The sanctuary is located on the bank of the confluence of the Wardha and Wainganga rivers. During the monsoons, the river water rises and enters the sanctuary mainly through the numerous nallahs. In addition to the variety of fish in the backwater, shrimp and turtles also enter the sanctuary. The reserve has an amazing riparian ecosystem in which populations of fish, shrimp and turtles thrive. They are also home to rich aquatic life and birdlife and places of natural beauty and tranquility. The sanctuary has a rich floral diversity where different species of shrubs, vines, grasses and thick teak forests are found.
The sanctuary is rich in wildlife. Tigers, leopards, wild cats, bears, wild dogs, deer, sambars and many other animals live in the reserve. The reserve is under the control of Chief Conservator of Forests and Field Director, Tadoba Andhari Tiger Reserve. The best time to visit the park is during and between the months of February and May.
