Gandhinagar is the capital of the state of Gujarat in India. Gandhinagar is located about 23 kilometers north of Ahmedabad, at the western central point of the industrial corridor between the metropolitan cities of Delhi and Mumbai.
Gandhinagar is located on the western bank of the Sabarmati River, about 545 km north of Mumbai and 901 km southwest of Delhi. Akshardham Temple is located in Gandhinagar. There was a determination to make Gandhinagar a purely Indian venture, partly because the state of Gujarat was the birthplace of Mahatma Gandhi. For this reason, the planning was carried out by two Indian urban planners: Prakash M Apte and HK Mewada, who had been Le Corbusier's apprentices in Chandigarh.
Gandhinagar has an average elevation of 81 meters (266 ft). The city is situated on the banks of the Sabarmati River in east-central Gujarat. The area of 20,543 km2 around Gandhinagar is covered by the capital territory of Gujarat. Gandhinagar covers an area of 326 km2 (126 sq mi). In summer the river usually dries up, leaving only a small trickle of water. Gandhinagar is the tree capital of India, with a green cover of 54% of its land area.
