Jagatsinghpur district is one of the thirty districts of Odisha on the east coast of India. It became a new district on 1 April 1993 and was separated from Cuttack district. It is located between 860 3' E and 860 45' E and between 19058' and 20023' N latitude. The old name was Hariharapur. Jagatsinghpur city is the district headquarters. With a literacy rate of 88.5% among males and 68.5% among females, the district scores better than the national average in literacy and is one of the developed districts of Odisha. The district tops the list in male literacy rate and second in female literacy rate in Odisha.
Deltaic and partially coastal; Jagatsinghpur district has a triangular shape and small geographical proportions. It is the smallest district in the state and covers an area of 1759 km2. It has its own history dating back to the 6th century AD. and is contemporary with the Prachi Valley civilization. The archaeological remains, the navigation network, domestic and foreign trade, textile production and design, religious tolerance and the glorious pioneering role in the fight for freedom; have a distinctive flavor.
The place is mainly known for its existence, located very close to the Mahanadi River and the Bay of Bengal, and foreshadowed many final episodes and memorable legacies about the beginning of humanity.
