It is currently part of the Red Corridor. During the British Raj, Jashpur was the capital of Jashpur State, one of the princely states of the Eastern States Agency. Jashpur was a princely state before independence. The regions history is rather sketchy. Local here say evidence suggests that a Dom dynasty ruled the area in the mid-18th century. The last Dom ruler Raibhan was defeated and murdered by the founder of the current Jashpur state Sujan Rai. It is said that Banswada, a smaller state in the ancient province of Rajputana, was the birthplace of the wheels of Sujan Rai. They established their rule and kingdom in Sonpur. Sujan Rai, the eldest son of the Suryavanshi king, was on a hunting expedition in deep forests, his father (king) died.
Given the tradition and requirement of the occasion, his younger brother was crowned, as the kings throne could not be left unoccupied even for a while. Upon returning from the hunting expedition, Sujan Rai was offered and requested to take over the throne. But he preferred to be a Sangasi and went into the forest. Wandering about, he reached Khudia, the main camp of the Dom kingdom. There he discovered that the subjects were unhappy and dissatisfied with the Dom Raja Raibhan and were about to revolt. Sujan Rai led the popular uprising and defeated the Dom Raja in battle. Now Sujan Rai became the king and a new state Jashpur was founded by him. The current Jashpur royal family belongs to that dynasty The north-south length of this district is about 150 km, and the east-west width is about 85 km. The total area is 6,205 km².
