Jehanabad
The hills of Barabar are undoubtedly the most sought after tourist destination of Jehanabad district. It is home to the worlds oldest surviving caves. Being a rare historical site today, this has become an international tourist destination and attracts a fair number of foreign tourists every year. It is located near Makhdumpur village in Jehanabad district. For thousands of years these caves certainly remained as religious centers for countless Jain monks, but there are historical accounts that prove that even Gautama Buddha meditated in these caves. It has the special echo effect function; which means that every sound made here lasts 3 minutes.
Jehanabad district has a certain place in the history of India. The description can be found in the famous book Aine-e-Akbari. The book says the place was badly hit by famine in the 17th century and people starved to death. The Moghul Emperor Aurangzeb, at whose time the book was being rewritten, established a Mandi for the enlightenment of the people and named the Mandi as JAHANARA. The Mandi was under the direct control and supervision of Jahanara. She is believed to have spent a lot of time here. Over time, the place became known as JAHANARABAD and later as JEHANABAD.
