Kanyakumari
Kanniyakumari, also known as Cape Comorin, is a town in Kanniyakumari district in the state of Tamil Nadu, India. It is the southernmost tip of the Indian subcontinent and the southernmost city in mainland India, which is why it is sometimes called "The End of the World". The city is situated 90 kilometers south of Thiruvananthapuram city and about 20 kilometers south of Nagercoil, the district headquarters of Kanniyakumari.
Kanniyakumari is a popular tourist destination and pilgrimage site in India. Notable tourist attractions include the unique sunrise and sunset points, the 41-metre-high Thiruvalluvar statue and the Vivekananda Rock Monument off the coast. The city is located at the tip of peninsular India and is bordered to the west, south and east by the Laccadive Sea. It has a coastline of 71.5 kilometers (44.4 mi) that extends along these three sides.
On the banks of the city there is a temple dedicated to the Goddess Kanniyakumari (the Virgin Goddess), after whom the city is named. Kanniyakumari has been a city since the Sangam period and is referred to in ancient Malayalam literature and in the accounts of Ptolemy and Marco Polo.
