Mayurbhanj
Mayurbhanj district is one of the 30 districts of the state of Odisha in eastern India. It has the distinction of being the largest district in Odisha by area. The district headquarters is located in Baripada along with other major cities including Rairangpur, Karanjia and Bahalda. As of 2011, Mayurbhanj is the third most populated district in Odisha after Ganjam and Cuttack.
Archaeological findings suggest that human settlements in Mayurbhanj district date back to the Lower Paleolithic of the Stone Age. These settlements flourished along the Burhabalanga River and its tributaries. The presence of a constant source of water not only sustained the early human inhabitants, but also attracted wildlife from the Similipal forest, making it easier to hunt smaller animals from the safety of the caves. The region's thin forest cover provided edible roots and fruits. Initially, the tools used by these early settlers were quite simple and resembled broken pebbles with minimal flaking, similar to those found in Paleolithic industries in Africa.
These tools have evolved over time to include hand axes, cleavers, scrapers, knives, caracarinates and points, varying in complexity, shape and size. Stratigraphy does not provide a means of categorizing them into different groups to understand their technical development. Typological analysis suggests the presence of two specific types of tools with production techniques related to European Abbevilian, Acheulean and Clactonian industries, indicating rapid technological progress.
