Structures and sites from before the reign of Mughal Emperor Akbar are extremely rare due to the changing course of the Sutlej River over the centuries. As a result, very few ancient sites have been discovered in the Moga area. This effect is more pronounced in the western part of the district.
The location of ancient towns and cities can be deduced from the present from the mounds of earth, bricks and pottery that have been excavated, called thehs. These hills are evidence that the banks of the river were inhabited in ancient times. Several coins have been discovered at the site of these mounds.
