Nalgonda
Nalgonda is a district in the southern part of Telangana. Its name is derived from two Telugu words namely Nalla (Black) and Konda (Hill). Nalgonda was previously called Neelagiri by Rajput rulers and later it was known as Nallagonda after the conquest by Bahamian King, Allauddin Bahaman Shah. The district is spread over an area of 2,449.79 square kilometers. Currently in a ruined state, Deverakonda Fort was once formidable, set amid seven hills. Built around the 13th and 14th centuries, the fort was completely under the control of Padma Nayaka Kings from AD 1287 to AD 1482, defeating all attempts to conquer it.
Although now in ruins, the fort tells a lot about the brave kings of the past. Nalgonda contains several religious sites, including Maruthi Mandir; Shah Lateef Ullah Quadri Sahab Dargah; and Kolanupaka Temple, a Jain shrine. Other attractions include Nagarjuna Sagar Dam, a Gowthama Buddha Museum, and Bhuvanangiri Fort built by Tribhuvanamalla Vikramaditya VI, panagallu someswara temple, and many mosques built by Alamgir in and around the district.
