Nayagarh
Nayagarh is both a city and the municipal headquarters of Nayagarh district in the Indian state of Odisha.
The story of the founding of Nayagarh State in the 13th century is an important chapter in the political history of Odisha. Suryamani of the Baghela dynasty came to Puri on pilgrimage from "Rewa" of Madhya Pradesh and established his kingdom at Nayagarh. On the way to Puri, both Suryamani and his brother Chandramani rested overnight at Gunanati. The area was full of tigers and at night a tiger attacked him. Both brothers fought the tiger and killed it. The locals praised the brave brothers and elected Suryamani as their leader. Suryamani gradually built his fort at Gunanati and married a girl from Mali (a cast known as worshiper of Lord Shiv). After the death of his first wife, he remarried a Kshatriya girl. From there he attacked Haripur and Ralaba. While he was sleeping, a tiger attacked him in Ralaba; He fought again and killed him. At that moment he saw a woman pass by with an empty pot to get water. Surprisingly, he returned with a baby. Suryamani immediately blocked the path of that lady and wanted to know more about the mystery. The lady said that she was Bouri Thakurani (a local goddess worshipped) and that the tiger that killed the king was the boy. She advised Suryamani to kill her and worship her as her deity. From that date, Suryamani worshiped "Bauri Thakurani" at Ralaba, built his fort there and adopted the tiger's head as the symbol of the state.
