Ratnagiri
Ratnagiri is a port city on the coast of the Arabian Sea in Ratnagiri district in the southwestern part of Maharashtra, India. The district is part of the Konkan division of Maharashtra. The city is known for Hapus or Alphonso mangoes. Ratnagiri is the birthplace of Indian independence activist Lokmanya Tilak. Thibaw, the last king of Burma, was exiled with his consort Supayalat and his two daughters to a two-story brick mansion in Ratnagiri. The building is now known as Thibaw Palace. This place has many villages like Karla, Rajiwada, Mirkarwada etc.
Ratnagiri was an administrative capital under the Bijapur Sultanate. A fort built by the Bijapur Sultanate and rebuilt by the Maratha king Shivaji in 1670 stands on a promontory near the port. In 1731, Ratnagiri came under the control of the Kingdom of Satara and in 1818 it was incorporated into British India. Ratnagiri is the birthplace of Indian freedom fighter Lokmanya Bal Gangadhar Tilak. He was born on July 23, 1856, after which he moved to Pune with his family at the age of 10.
In 1886, King Thibaw of Burma was sent to Ratnagiri after being deposed and his country annexed by the British Empire. Along with his pregnant wife, his youngest queen, and his two young daughters, he would spend the rest of his life in Ratnagiri, as a prisoner of the British Crown. Ratnagiri was chosen for its remote location, some 5,000 kilometers from Thibaw's former royal seat of Mandalay, reachable only by sea for part of the year and far from any territory of a rival European power.
