Sambalpur is the fifth largest city in the Indian state of Odisha. It is situated on the banks of the Mahanadi River, with a population of 335,761 (as per 2011 census). Prehistoric settlements have been recorded. It is the home of the Sambalpuri saree.

The city contains many temples, historical buildings and parks. The educational institutions include Sambalpur University, Veer Surendra Sai Institute of Medical Sciences and Research (VIMSAR), Veer Surendra Sai University of Technology (VSSUT), Gangadhar Meher University, Indian Institute of Management Sambalpur and State Open University of Odisha (OSOU). Hirakud Dam, the world's longest earthen dam and Asia's largest artificial lake, is located in Sambalpur.
After India's independence, many commercial and government institutions emerged in and around Sambalpur. It is a major railway junction of Odisha with the headquarters of Sambalpur Railway Division in the East Coast Railway Zone. National Highway 53, National Highway 55 pass through the city and State Highways 10 and 15 emerge from the city.
