Vaishali
Vaishali district is a district in the Indian state of Bihar. It is part of Tirhut division. Vaishali is known as the birthplace of Mahavira of the Jain religion. Hajipur, the largest city and district headquarters, is famous for its banana plantation. The district is connected by highways NH-77 and NH-322, which connect the capital Patna, divisional headquarters Muzaffarpur and eastern district Samastipur.
According to legend, Vaishali takes its name from King Vishala, son of Ikshvaku, who founded the city. Vaishali was the capital of the vibrant Licchavi Republic and was closely linked to the early history of both Buddhism and Jainism. During that period, Vaishali was an ancient metropolis and the capital of the Vajji Mithila confederation republic, which covered most of the Himalayan-Gangetic region in present-day Bihar. The Magadha rulers of the Shishunaga dynasty shifted the capital from Pataliputra to Vaishali.
